Press release GWAloop/Miniloop 2012

To all endurance athletes/cyclists:

The Gisborne based GWAloop cycle race, New Zealand’s longest one day cycle challenge of 204 km for individuals and team members, has changed dates. This historical October Labour weekend event is now rescheduled to Saturday 21st January 2012. This also includes the popular 26.4 Km Miniloop.

After thorough debriefing the event organisers have made this decision based on the following reasons:

* A large majority of participants said they would prefer the events to be held during the summer period making training for this challenging event easier.
* It moves the event away from other current popular endurance races.
* Previous participants wanting to return in the future would like to see the event held away from a long weekend each year.
* This new date  is now within school holidays
* Great pre event training for those racing Ironman NZ
* Organisers hope that this change of date creates an opportunity for more participants to be involved in this great event.

Therefore no GWAloop or Miniloop event in 2011, new date 21st January 2012

GWAloop’s 4th Birthday

On 23 October 2010 GWAloop Cycle Challenge celebrates its 4th Birthday, In Gisborne.

Last year's winner Jeremy Vennell from team Bissell took 5 hours 49 minutes and 31 seconds to complete the 204km circuit from Gisborne to Wairoa and back via the Tiniroto Road. Along with his team mate Ben Jaques-Maynes from USA they made the ride look easy.

However the race record is still held by Stephen Sheldrake who rode 5:45:49 in 2008. That year also saw Josh Barley from Wellington U23 division finish in 5:52:21.

Ladies - Last years winner Candice Hammond will be returning to defend her title.

If you are looking challenge this coming Labour Weekend then mark Saturday 23 October on your calendar.

The race record is up for grabs this year. The challenge is out. It is unlikely Stephen will ride this year due to injury which leaves the race wide open at the top end.

For those choosing to make their own personal challenge and complete the course in their own time come and have a go. Ride time is 10 hours before cut off.

The quickest female individual over the last 3 years is Sarah Smallman from Christchurch in 7:12:56.

The team section can be made up of 2 to 4 persons. Ride 100km each for 2 or break it up for 4 riders with distances from 60+km to 30km. A distance to suit those choosing to have a go to those seeking a longer challenge.
