The major sponsor, a new prizegiving venue and, if all goes to plan, a lot of new competitors . . . Downer EDI Works Limited Gwaloop 2009 Cycle Challenge organisers have ticked two of those three boxes.
Now their mission possible is to attract more riders to the 204-kilometre Labour Weekend race from Gisborne to Wairoa by way of Morere and back again through Tiniroto.
Race director Terry Sheldrake has a number in mind - 300 to 400 participants - and he is urging anyone interested to have a look at the race website, www.gwaloop.co.nz for futher incentive.
He was delighted not only to confirm the major sponsor but to have employees of Downer EDI Works taking part.
Manager Derek Walker said he and staff were planning to race and he encourages other businesses and individuals to take up the challenge.
Sheldrake added a four-stage corporate section last year and would love to see more businesses take part. Having four-person teams breaks it up nicely and allows for a greater range of competitors.
"We encourage local people thinking about taking part to come along to the Gisborne Cycling Club events, where training advice and help are available," said Sheldrake.
"It is great to again have the support of Derek and his team, along with the Gisborne Cycling Club and other supporting sponsors, as without them the event simply would not proceed."
Those keen on getting into a team should contact Kathy Sheldrake.
